Share some personal information about yourself. What defines you? What are you passionate about?
Hi, I’m Denise 😀 I’d like to say that I am just a regular wife and mom of 3 busy kids, but I am more. 39 is knocking on my door very shortly and I try to make the most of life. I have been married for almost 13 years and my kids are 11, 10 and 7. I was a cosmetologist for a few years and I owned a massage therapy business for about 8 years. With kids came a move and closing of my business. My husband started his business during my first pregnancy. We now own 3 businesses. Moxie-fit is my baby tho. I teach group fitness. You can find it on Facebook for motivation, challenges and photos. I am one of those “everything works out the way it is supposed to” kind of people that doesn’t let stress or worries consume them. I live life by the seat of my pants and we are always on the go. Kinda butts it’s head with my “everything in it’s place” slight OCD compulsions, but we survive. LOL
What motivates you to tackle your fitness goals?
I have always had a passion for fitness. I remember weightlifting with the football team in high school cause I wasn’t interested in cheerleading. I played sports, ran etc… it just didn’t hit me HARD until 5 or 6 years ago. After my 3rd child I was so unhappy with how my body hadn’t “snapped back” that I decided to take a Zumba class. I got certified to teach it and got my group fitness license. After a couple years I needed a change and joined a gym that was opening in my small town. Lifting once again became my passion. I also found a new format to teach that incorporated all the things that I LOVE, including strength training. Seeing how quickly my body changed I started thinking of competing. Took me about 6 months to convince myself that I could overcome my insecurities of being in front of people on a stage, I’m proud to say that with Olesya’s help, I just competed in my second show.
What has been your proudest fitness accomplishment to date?
My proudest fitness accomplishment is really pushing my body to see what it is capable of. I know I am NOT done either. Bigger and better, stronger and wiser. Leading a group fitness class also has HUGE rewards. Seeing others progress thru their own fitness goals is a great feeling of pride in what I do. Competing has definitely been a huge accomplishment also!! I NEVER thought I would have the confidence to stand up and strut my stuff in a tiny bikini in front of a ton of people, but the AH HAAA moment for me was the professional photo shoots that I had done after my competitions. When I saw the competition photos, my mind went straight to comparing myself to the other women in my category. You know the game…. where do I need to improve, who had the best shape, hair, tan, suit, etc…. BUT with the photo shoot pictures, I was literally slapped in the face that it was ME in those pictures.
What do you love most about the fitness lifestyle and being in shape?
I love trying to help others. I love seeing what the body is capable of. I love the health benefits of a healthy lifestyle. I love being STRONG. I LOVE that my kids and husband support me and are proud of me.
What’s been the hardest obstacle to overcome in your path to reaching your goals?
The hardest obstacle is the self hate talk. I have NEVER had a healthy self image. Or self esteem for that matter. SLOWLY but surely that has shifted. I’m not saying I’m cured, but the bashing has considerably dropped. I used to critique myself on EVERYTHING. Hair, make up, clothing etc. Now I don’t always love what I see in the mirror, but I don’t bash myself anymore. In fact, I am proud most days. 😀
Tell us about your future goals and dreams, relating to fitness or otherwise.
My goals and dreams are to keep on this path. Maybe more shows, maybe not. I won’t lie, I did my trainings on summer break when my kids were home and that was tough. I plan to get more defined and stronger. As a family we are breaking ground in spring with a new building to move our business as it continues to grow like crazy. I plan on teaching my classes as long as possible. Keep on being a crazy busy mom of 3 very active involved kids and just be happy in the moments.
What’s your favorite “clean” meal or food item?
Food…. my favorite 😀
I LOVE SALMON…. like, I could eat it every meal kind of love….. lol
I am simple and don’t need much variety. I like my salads with a protein tossed in, I enjoy Almond butter immensely. Mostly I eat clean with a treat here and there.
Your preferred treat meal?
Brownies with peanut butter and ice cream…. Wait, that is not a meal….. 😉 Hmmmmmm, I would have to say tacos, with the works… refied beans, chips and salsa, guacamole…
What type of training do you like best?
I do cardio (R.I.P.P.E.D.) everyday being I’m a group fitness instructor, but I LOVE lifting. I lift everyday also. I do a split. Body part a day. I run here and there or do biking intervals to switch things up. My rest day is and active recovery day so I’m always doing something.
What kind of music helps motivate you in the gym?
I actually LOVE the R.I.P.P.E.D soundtracks, but I also range from country to hardcore metal. Just depends on my mood/ activity. At the moment, my “go to” playlist iPod consists of Pitbull, Maroon 5, Zac Brown, Ariana Grande, JLo, Skillet, Nirvana….. All types!!
Your favorite motivational quote. What thought helps you get moving when exercising is the last thing on your mind?
So many quotes I LOVE…. “Beauty isn’t measured in pounds”
“Come out of the masses. Stand alone like a lion and live your life according to your own light” – Osho
“Make today count”
“Anything is possible if you have enough nerve” J.K. Rowling
“Screw the scale”
“Stronger than Yesterday”
“How bad do you want it”
So many more. I post them daily on the Moxie-fit Facebook page!
What’s the best piece of advice you can offer someone who’s looking to get in shape or reach her fitness goals?
DO IT, Just get up and move. It doesn’t matter what you enjoy whether it’s weight training, cardio, classes, walking, running, etc… Learn new things, embrace change, step out of your comfort zone and know that it isn’t easy, BUT you do get better and stronger. AND it’s worth it!!!
If there are any people you’d like to thank for helping you on your journey, do so here!
I first and foremost have to thank my husband and kids. They allow me to keep my crazy schedule with lifting and my classes. I choose to get up extra early and workout so we can enjoy our free time all together on weekends. They understand when I want to eat out of tupperware instead of a restaurant. lol Without their support I couldn’t do a lot of the things I do. To my class participants AKA my cheerleaders in anything I attempt to pull off fitness wise… THANK YOU!! To Olesya for helping me reach my fitness goal not once, but twice!!! For being at my beck and call whenever I had a question or minor freak out. For showing me that with the right nutrition and lifting, the body can do amazing things. Thank you, Thank you, Thank you! To my friend Carrie… She was the one was the one who gave me that final push over the fence to attempt to compete the very first time. I LOVE YOU!!! To all my other friends who shared the days with me and listened to me complain about how sore I was, Thank you also!!… You know who you are!!!
Any other comments or thoughts you’d like to share?
Sheesh… I think I have said enough! LOL
Would you recommend Olesya’s coaching services to others? If so, please describe what made your experience positive. If not, why not?
I absolutely recommend Olesya and her services. I have already. I belong to a group of women who lift and have given out Olesya’s name at least 10 times already. I have been contacted by email, Facebook, etc about how to go about training for a show. They get sent Olesya’s link instantly. I can’t say enough about the positive experiences I have had with her coaching. From food adjustments to fit my tastes, lifting experiences, and general questions that popped into my head at all hours of the day/ night. She was always there with an answer. I specifically remember e-mailing her at like 2 in the morning with a silly question thinking that I would hear back when I got up the next morning,…. I heard a beep,…. She had responded immediately. What an amazing woman!! If you are considering a competition, she is the ONLY choice!
